How To Liberate Your Hard Drive By Transferring Logic Pro X's Sound Library To An External Drive
Hollin Jones on Thu, October 4th | 0 comments
At long last, Logic users have the option to move their core sound library and free up lots of space on their drives with the latest 10.4.2 update. See how in this free course.

Logic Pro comes with an excellent core library of sounds and loops as well as sample content that's required to power its bundled plug-in instruments. But all that stuff has to live somewhere, and that has always been on your Mac's hard drive. Apple has made this a bit easier to manage over the years, allowing you for example to download parts of the library from the cloud on demand. But if you wanted the full library you'd need to sacrifice at least 30GB of of drive space and on laptops, that's not always ideal.

Now in the latest Logic pro 10.4.2 update, Apple has made it possible to easily offload the library to an external drive, which is great news for anyone who would rather keep their internal drive free for recordings. In this video from the FREE course Logic Pro X 10.4.2 - What's New, Joshua Carney shows you step by step how to do it.

Before now you could trick Logic into looking in new locations by using folder aliases, but it was an imperfect workaround. Now in Logic's Preferences there is a new option called Relocate Sound Library, and in the window that appears when you select it, you'll see a list of available drives connected to your Mac. In true Apple style you don't even have to go to the Finder to move the library - it can all be done from inside Logic.

Joshua explains that moving the library can be beneficial even if you are not short on space. Provided your external drive is fast enough, having Logic record audio internally but load project and instrument samples from a different drive will often mean better performance and a smaller chance of slowdowns. Be sure to check out the full, free course for a comprehensive guide to the very long list of changes, tweaks and new features in this latest update!
