NAMM 2017: IRCAM and Flux Demo Revolutionary Spatial Placement Software
Hollin Jones on Sat, January 21st | 0 comments
Imagine being able to simulate up to 22 virtual speakers inside a regular pair of headphones. IRCAM and Flux have managed to come up with a remarkable application to do just that.

Audio researchers IRCAM have teamed up with software developer Flux to create something really interesting in the form of Spat Revolution, a mixing and spatialisation application that allows incredible control over the placement of sound sources in a virtual environment.

With the capability to show you a full 3D image of your mix, it can simulate up to 22 speakers inside a regular, binaural pair of headphones and will appeal to anyone working with VR, surround sound or even musicians looking to take their productions in a new direction. Since almost everyone listens to music on regular stereo headphones of some description, the ability to simulate multiple speakers inside that stereo field would seem to open up whole new worlds of mixing possibilities.

The software will be available in April 2017 and will cost around 1000 Euro, though the developers point out that it is both a unique and high-end tool.
