As music making tools become more accessible, it's easier than ever to ditch the band and record and produce an album by yourself. Here are 5 pitfalls to avoid when doing solo.

1. Don’t Get Stuck in the Box

Fig 1 Mixing one or two live audio tracks into a primarily “in-the-box” arrangement can help provide a looser, more musical feel

2. Don’t Skimp on the Vocal

Fig 2 Don’t settle when it comes to the lead vocal

3. Don’t Record One-and-Done Parts

Fig 3 Go back and revisit earlier performances, to get more musical interaction between parts

4. Don’t Be an Island

Fig 4 Get feedback from a trusted listener with “fresh ears”

5. Don’t Rush to the Finish Line

Fig 5 Take frequent breaks during production to clear your head/ears

I always enjoy Joe Albano's columns and tutorials. In my opinion, he really knows what he's talking about. As a "one man band" myself, I will definitely keep his suggestions in mind. Thanks, Joe!!

Can't say I can get into most of what Joe Albano writes, but this article was stellar to say the least. My only problem is how to convinve some people that need to get these ideas into their heads to just do it.
