Momentary and toggle midi signals - multiple midi controllers
Hi, Context: I am using Ableton more and more, but on an amateur level. I have 2 midi controllers and would like to map their controls to arm my tracks and use the faders for volume level. Problem: The faders stuff works, but the arming doesn't because Ableton doesn't receive a toggle signal from the controllers. Wich is strange because I've seen them being used for the exact same purpose in other videos. After a long search I found out that they are sending values 0 and 127. But it's all very confusing to me. Question: Is there a way to make them send a toggle signal, or Ableton to interpret it as one? Controllers: EZ-create fade Nektar Impact Thanks!

Hi - Any MIDI button/knob/slider should output MIDI values from 0-127, so you should be able to map record arm buttons in Live to be controlled by whatever controls [buttons/knobs/sliders] on your keyboard you choose. If you were able to map controls to volume, use the same method to map the record-arm buttons—it doesn't matter if the keyboard control is a toggle or if it puts out continuous values, as long as it outputs values of 0 and 127 (all MIDI messages do) then it should work as a record toggle control. I was able to map a fader-box slider to a Live track arm button—at its minimum position the slider output MIDI value 0 and turned track-arming off; at its maximum position it output 127 and record-armed the track. Buttons on the keyboard would be more elegant, as long as they can be toggled between 0 and 127—check the Nektar docs. (Btw I couldn't find any reference to any kind of MIDI controller called "EZ-create fade"..?)

Hi, Thanks for the reply! I think I understand what you are saying, but there's one thing I can't seem to get right. I didn't said it in my original post, but I was able to map the arm function to my buttons, but the they only arm when the button is hold down. After your message is tested the fader for arming and that works the way you explain in your reply. So the fade works for arming the button when 'not 0' and arming it whenever it has a value. With the arm button on the controller he only arms as long as the button is pushed. I can't see an option to adjust values and declare it has to be armed when pushed once and stay armed. Thanks! Kind regards,

Oh and one more thing. The EZ-creator is the 'Devine EZ-creator fade'. But its a very cheap thing and appearently there are more brands selling the same thing, this is the one: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Omnitronic-11045070-OMNITRONIC-11045070-Fad-Controller/dp/B008RW356O/ref=pd_sbs_267_5/259-2286188-5329607?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B008RW356O&pd_rd_r=dd378b0e-1bb3-4b9b-9497-092737856582&pd_rd_w=xfzAF&pd_rd_wg=NE92k&pf_rd_p=2773aa8e-42c5-4dbe-bda8-5cdf226aa078&pf_rd_r=0R8RZPPZ9T2EBFF8AVRE&psc=1&refRID=0R8RZPPZ9T2EBFF8AVRE I know, its a cheap thing, but it should be able to do the really easy stuff like arming, no?

So the question really is whether there's a way to switch the function of the buttons on a controller from momentary [which is what you apparently have] to toggle [alternate button pushes put out 0 and 127].. The Nektar Impact documentation would seem to suggest that this is possible [the manual lists Assignment Type MIDI CC Toggle as a button option, p.16 in the pdf manual linked below, with setup instructions]. Since you didn't say which model Nektar Impact you have, here are links to the relevant support pages: https://nektartech.com/impact-support/ https://nektartech.com/test-user-guides-for-impact-series/ http://support.nektartech.com/Downloads/Impact_LX+_User_Guides/Impact_LX49+_61+_User_Guide_ENG_1.0.pdf And here's a another document from the Nektar site that offers a a script for Ableton Live that would seem to do what you want: "Fader Buttons: Buttons 1-8 arm the first 8 tracks in the project": https://nektartech.com/using-ableton-live-with-impact/ A search for "Devine EZ-creator Fade"didn't turn up any website or documentation, so no way to determine if button toggle functionality is possible without having one handy—I'd say the Nektar is your best bet..

Alright! Thanks man. I've gone trough the manuals before, but as I said, i'm at a verry beginner level, so I do not always get evrything from the start. I'll use the Nektar script and dabble a bit further with the other one. Cheers!
