Hello. In the past, I was able to save work I created on Garageband without any problems, however, now it will not allow me to do so. I took a screenshot of a notice I received which was this: "The document 'My Song' could not be saved. You don't have permission. To view or change permissions, select the item in the Finder and choose File > Get Info" I did exactly that and couldn't find any indication on how to change the settings. Is there some way to override this? If so, how? Thanks in advance! :)

Hi Knight - A couple of things come to mind.. Sometimes my Mac won't let me save something with a similar message (for no apparent reason) * -- usually I do a Save As, use the same name, hit Replace, and it saves the file. If it really is a Permissions issue, then are you saving to a different HD -- you might have to change the HD permissions (Get Info); Or are you logged in as a different user..? * Apparently this kind of issue in not uncommon and manifests itself in different ways, with no definitive cause..

Hi Knight - The Get Info permissions the message is referring to would be the ones at the bottom of the Get Info window for a GB Project file [see the screenshot below, those are the Permission settings for one of my GB files]. But I tend to doubt that'll actually be it. On the other hand, sometimes if you're saving to, say, a different folder [as opposed to the default GB folder in the Music folder in your User folder], some folders by default have restrictive permissions, so it could be something to do with that [though usually in that case the message asks for your computer password].. From what I could determine this kind of issue is fairly common, but I couldn't find any general solutions. Beyond the method that seems to work for me, all I can suggest are some pretty standard troubleshooting steps.. - Hard computer shutdown & restart - Try with various GB Projects -- old ones, new ones -- and see if you can pinpoint any consistency as to when it happens - Does it happen with any other applications? - Are there any settings in the Security prefs [in System Preferences] than may have gotten changed inadvertently * * I'm still on Mojave but apparently there are even more in Catalina - Maybe try running GB as a different user [create a test user in the Users Preference pane] - Maybe try reinstalling GB If nothing works, a call to Apple Tech Support might be in order -- if you decide to go that way, try to get to a second-tier tech, they're usually pretty good..

Hello again, Joe. Somehow, by resaving my file as a New Document and then saving it as Save As, it works, thank you! :) One more thing. I have some audio files from FL Studio that I wish to transfer to Garageband. Is there a way to do that?

Hi Knight - Glad you found a solution that works! Re transferring audio files between DAWs: the most reliable approach is to bounce all individual Tracks down to audio files starting at Bar 1 [most DAWs have some sort of option to do this all at once for all tracks or all selected tracks], and then drag them into the destination DAW and position them all to start at Bar 1 there. Be sure to set the correct Tempo in the destination DAW -- the tempo [or Tempo map] and any MIDI/Instrument tracks that you want to keep as MIID/Instrument tracks can be exported as a Standard MIDI File (.mid) that should be compatible with all DAWs [you'd have to re-assign compatible Instruments but that should work fine as well] Of course if you're going from GB to Logic all that isn't necessary, you can just open the GB file directly in Logic..

Hi Joe, Curious, how do you recommend I should save a sound file in FL Studio and then transfer it to Garageband? MP3, WAV, OGG, FLAC, or MIDI?

Hi Knight - If you're transferring audio tracks, then definitely WAV. If you want to transfer an Instrument (MIDI) track, then you have two choices.. - You could bounce it down to audio, as above (again, as a WAV file) -- this is easy, but you lose the ability to make further MIDI tweaks in the destination DAW, since you'd be importing the rendered audio and not the MIDI data - You can export it as a Standard MIDI File -- this will transfer the MIDI data over to the destination DAW, but not the Instrument plug-in that actually creates the sound. It's a little more complicated because to duplicate the sound exactly you'd have to manually select the same Instrument plug-in in the new DAW, which you can only do if you have the same Instrument plug-in installed for both DAWs. If not, then you 'll have to select a suitable replacement Instrument. This could be a better one, but even if it is, it might not be a perfect match for the performance data -- specifically it may not respond to MIDI Velocity (musical dynamics) the same way the original Instrument did, and the performance may sound wrong or not as intended -- that would then require you to tweak the MIDI Velocity curve, which is easier in some DAWs than others. Still, this would be the most flexible option for MIDI/Instrument tracks, if you're ok with putting in some extra work to optimize the sound in the new DAW,

Hello again, Joe. My apologies if I am bothering you, but I am experiencing some difficulty in saving that audio file as a WAV. I attempted to save it as such and once I went into Garageband, I was unable to bring it in there. What am I doing wrong?

Hi Knight - You should be able to drag any WAV file into GB. Double-check to make sure the WAV file was exported at 44.1k Sample Rate and 24-bit resolution (also double-check GB's Preferences to make sure 24-bit is enabled there too). Then drag it into empty space at the bottom of the Tracks area. If that doesn't work, try with different WAV files from different sources, to see if the problem is specifically with WAVs exported from the other DAW. If other WAVs import ok, then it would be something to do with the export function in the source DAW. Make sure it's not exporting at some other resolution (like 32 bit) and that the exported file has the .wav extension.
