    Logic 8 - Velocity Automation
While watching an orchestra on a cable channel, something click in my head and I got an idea regarding Volume Automation for a multi-timbral instrument in Logic 8. What I noticed was the conductor motioning to the players what to do, in particular, how to play as in soft or loud. Since players with their instruments aren't plugged into amps, they can't control volume, but they can control velocity. That's when I decide to take a different approach at Volume Automation on a multi-timbral, why not just do Velocity Automation with Automation in the Arrange Window for a Multi-timbral instrument in Logic 8. All I have to do is take the CC7 value and apply it to the velocity of the notes that follow. When I get another CC7, I apply that new value to the velocity of the notes that follow and so forth. This has a more realistic feel than that of volume automation. In a live orchestra, the volume is the same for everyone, what's different for each player is velocity. Concentrating on velocity is better for sampled instruments as well, since not only do you get different WAV files for each note, but you also get different WAV files for each notes velocity. For the different WAV files for velocity, they don't just turn the decibel (db) down on the WAV file, it's played the way a player would play the instrument, loud -> to -> soft. So with all this info, take a peek at a Logic 8 Enviroment Macro I created to accomplish this using the Volume Automation in the Arrange Window for a instrument created as a Multi-Timbral in Logic 8, it's now Velocity Automation. Note: I've also taken into consideration with this Macro, the "Machine-Gun" effect as well.
