Synchronizing music and video
Hi All, I got a question... Is there any way I can synchronize music and video in a live performance through Main Stage 2? By this I mean playing logic software instruments and having the video synchronized at the same time. If this is not possible with logic or main stage, does anyone know any software that would allow me to do so? I'd appreciate any help. Thanks! cheers, -fvs

Hi fvs, Perhaps you are looking for a VJ application... or perhaps Ableton Live can do what you want? I'm not sure I understand what you mean by "playing logic software instruments and having the video synchronized at the same time"? So you intend to play a note on your keyboard and a segment of video plays? or The speed at which you play determines the playback speed of the video? or something else? Thanks Rounik

Hi Rounik, Sorry that I wasn't very clear. What I intend to do is performing live with main stage, and I want to use audio samples, and trigger video as well. I don't know how could I do this. Is there any way to do it through Logic? Thanks!

Hi fvs, No problem! I made a little mixer in Logic on the weekend that triggers movie clips (and the attached audio) to playback when a specific note on my MIDI Controller is triggered. It uses Markers to segment parts of the video and simply plays back a sample in the EXS24 for each Marker's worth of video. I guess this is kind of what you wish to do? If it's more complex Have you investigated Ableton Live (which can rewire to Mainstage) and/or Cycling74's Max/Msp/Jitter for live video and audio and perhaps the following which a re designed specifically for VJ's: http://www.modul8.ch/ http://b-l-a-c-k-o-p.com/CamCamX-VJ-software-mac.html Infact this looks like a good site to learn more about VJ'ing: http://www.softwarevj.com/ :) Rounik

Hi Rounik, Thank you so much for the great websites! I will also try doing that mixer you said through logic. cheers, -Fvs

Hi fvs, No problem. Do add to this thread any info you find out. I think this is a very interesting idea about realtime video & audio in Logic and / or other apps. If you like I can send you the 'Video Mixer' environment I created. If you'd like it could you send an email to Support: http://www.macprovideo.com/support/ In the title/subject add: 'FOR ROUNIK from FVS' That way I can either send you the project direct to you email or send you a link where you can download it from. Unfortunately, the Private message system on the forums is not yet fully operational, which is why this way would be the best without you needing to share you personal email address on the forums for all to see! Let me know :) Rounik

Thanks! I will post any findings ; ) One more thing, I actually was thinking about your idea of the mixer already, but some other questions raised. What if I want to trigger a video per each song that I perform along with certain audio tracks, but at the same time playing instruments from logic or mainstage. Could Logic or that mixer you created allow me to have ready all these videos/tracks/instruments in one single session? Do you know if when projecting these videos on a screen I will loose control of my laptop when performing? Another solution that I thought about was to embed some of the audio tracks to my videos with Quicktime, then have them ready when I perform each song and have mainstage opened to have access to other audio tracks maybe and/or software instruments to play with my Midi keyboard. What do you think? Sorry for the overwhelming series of questions... thanks again, -Fvs

Hi fvs, No problem for the questions. It's funny that I woke up on Sunday Morning and thought 'I wanna build a Video Mixer and playback system in Logic' for no apparent reason - and then you posted here with a similar query on Monday! Well, it's probably best to send you a copy of the project so you can try it out and see how it works. I haven't tried using Mainstage with it yet - unfortunately I'm a bit short on time to experiment with it a lot right now. Yes, if you set it up you can play other instruments while controlling the Video playback. Bear in mind that you can map the 'Go to Marker #xx' buttons to respond to a button on your MIDI Controller. I have mine mapped from C7 to G7. You can embed the audio in the Video and play it that way... However, this may cause a time lag when moving between markers. I basically did the following: - Set up the movie in iMovie with fades and in the order desired. - exported it to H.264 etc. - Imported into Logic and extracted the audio track. - Opened it in the Sample Editor and set my own transient markers relating to each scene. - Created Markers at every transient marker. - Converted the audio region to a new sampler instrument and (because I was building a mixer) opened 8 instances of the sampler instrument on 8 channels. (One for each scene) - you may not need to do this :) - Split the Sampler Instrument Region into 8 sections and placed them on the corresponding channels (again this might not be necessary for you). Voila. When projecting... you shouldn't lose control of your laptop. It will simply be playing back video in Logic while you trigger Markers, other instruments or play live. It's difficult to explain as I'm still in the process of designing it and wondering whether it is robust enough for live use... Here's a pic. It shows the Video playing. The markers and Video track and the Video Mixer. Hi Rounik, Sorry for taking so long to reply. That looks awesome! I'd love to try it. Thanks a lot for sharing!! I've been trying to find out what's best for my live performances. I'll send you an email. : )

Hey fvs, No probs! I sent you a reply. Thanks, I like the look of it too, but bear in mind a lot of the channel strip layout is not really needed unless you want separate control over each of the 7/8 scenes I'd created - therefore giving each scene it's own track! Hope it helps. Rounik
