iPad & Logic - Your thoughts
Hello All, So Apple's latest creation, the iPad has been announced. (what? You haven't heard of it yet. Check this out: http://www.apple.com/ipad/ ) So, although it's not been released yet, there are some interesting details on what it can and cannot do. Some of the highlights: - iBooks - 9.7" screen - music and video playback - iWork apps for iPad! - iPhone apps run on it and iPad native apps can be developed. etc, etc. So, I'm thinking about how you would like to see the iPad be used in your studio. To start the ball rolling, I can imagine the iPad as a Logic control surface: A Logic app that maps controls / Transport / Faders to Logic on your Mac! What do you think? How would you like to see the iPad integrate with Logic Studio? (All comments and suggestions welcome!)

I think the possibility for a virtual control surface is beyond anything we can imagine, for instance spatial representations of sonic space as a controller, a graphics pad that converts image to sound, a virtual set of pads like the Monome or APC40, the possibilities are endless!

Are you thinking this would take the form of a control surface for Logic/GB specifically or a self contained iPad app? Perhaps I'm thinking too far inside the box of a Mixer style control surface for Logic's Mixer or Keyboard at the bottom with Logic's Environment or a synth like Sculpture up top...

Hmmm... Sounds good. generic controllers for any DAW... would be nice to have an already setup screen configuration for different DAWs too. Here's a couple of pics I put together to try and imagine what a Logic / Mainstage controller could look like on the iPad:

There will be dozens of MIDI control surfaces designed for the iPad. Many will have all kinds of interaction and animation... In fact, you'll see several ready by the release date! It's going to be a bonanza for music performance.

Hi Steve, Do you have any names or links? Just from creating the screenshot mock-ups above, I can feel Mainstage is perfectly primed to take advantage. This is going to be great. :) Rounik

There is software out already for the iPhone that allows you to create & control OSC objects; for example, touchOSC. http://hexler.net/software/touchosc OSCulator is the "middle-man" app, it enables touchOSC (or any OSC enabled device) to communicate with Logic, and convert OSC messages into MIDI messages. http://www.osculator.net/ After the announcement of the iPad, I got so excited that I did some research bought touchOSC, and OSCulator ... and now i've set up Logic with a mixer template (to start with) that has a volume fader and mute buttons. Very, very cool :-)
