Logic Pro 9.1 32-bit Apogee Ensemble Hey guys, Quick question on some latency in Logic (and if there is a previous post, maybe you could point me in the right direction)... During recording the guitarist is playing the part dead on with the beat, but then we play it back and its all slightly late/behind... What can I do? (we've had a similar problem with vocalists as well)

Hi Mikey What is the I/O Buffer size? Have you tried lowering it? Is there a value set for recording delay in Preferences > Audio [Devices]? Do you have any effects on the channels trip or the master channel... if so which one? You could manually use the Delay function in the region parameters area in the Inspector... Alternatively, do you have PDC on? Cheers Rounik

Hey Ok 256 is my buffer size.. and I've tried lowering but sometimes I get some pops... especially with the Kontakt 4 player (Alicia Keys plugin) On my Output 1-2 I normally keep an API 2500 from Waves I have no idea what PDC is.. hahaha And I'm familiar with the Delay function in the region parameters but I would have no idea what number I need to set it to. Plugin Delay Compensation yeah, you may need to tweak your delay setting. Experiment with it. Record the guitar playing quarter notes exactly in time with the metronome, then play it back and use negative delay to bring it into perfect time. Record that number. Then try putting that number into the record delay offset. I haven't really thought it through, (I had a hell of a session last night!!) but I think that should fix it. Steve

That is awesome... wells ;-) Good advice, and as for PDC - plug-in delay compensation... Preferences > Audio [General] - try setting low latency mode to On. I also would recommend against having the Waves plugin on your Output 1-2 during recording... :) Rounik

What do you mean by negative delay?

Rounik- First is the 256 an ok buffer or should I be at 128? I mean I'm running 2x2.66GHz Dual Core Intel Xeon with 7GB of 667 MHz Memory... but maybe that's not enough with big things like Omnisphere or Gladiator etc. Second, what would you recommend I have on that Output 1-2 during recording, maybe a substitute Logic plugin.... obviously it won't be there for the final bounce. And is there a way to just... I don't know do like a "ping" or something to check the delay.... I feel like there is a native Logic plugin somewhere in the back of my mind that addressed this but I was never really clear on how it worked

Hi Mikey, The I/O Buffer size is really down to your system and what you/guitar player find acceptable in terms of latency. The only thing I can suggest is to try it out. You may find 64 or 128 work great. It's very much a personal thing and finding what works best for your project. Don't be afraid to change this setting depending on what you're doing. i.e. lower size = less latency = ideal for recording. higher size = less strain on CPU = ideal for mixing with lots of plugins. I'd recommend placing NO plugins on the Output 1-2 and no limiters etc on other channel strips when recording... Alternatively, check out the use of low latency mode (plug in delay compensation).
