Distribution of info between cores
Hi all. I'm having that age old problem that info seems to find it's way only onto one core - running in 64 bit mode on an imac i7 quad core duo machine. Actually of the 8 cores showing, only one seems to see any activity and occasionally two. I'm out of practice in this area. I'm running some heavy duty plugins - trilian, Kontakt 4 (multi instances after seeing the videos on the site...) VSL, etc.... but most of the cores show availability, so I could do with some advice of how to distribute better! By the way... I was sent this..... http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3161 And here's the response I gave.... Yup. I knew this, but it doesn't help. I'm doing this anyway and I don't have any heavy channel strips with loads of plugins. I have lots of heavy processing plugins but on different strips individually. It's not made any difference and I don't know how to change the setup for the better!

Hi David, So this is with a multi Trilian and a multi Kontakt running at the same time? I'd understand if a single instrument was using one core only...

Hi Rounik. It's a multi instrument trilian (but not multi outputs) and a couple of instances of multi output kontakts. Using the Kontakt memory server I can see about a gig of memory running on Kontakt, but it's also running 7 instances of CLA (Chris Lord) Waves plugins for the drum auxes. They are intensive, but shouldn't kill it like they do. They are, of course running via the 32 bit bridge at the moment until Waves give us 64 bit support... I'm finding that if I don't run the Waves plugins, there is absolutely no problem and it all seems fine. It's once the bridge is placed under strain that it all seems to pile onto one core and overload without distribution. Any ideas? By the way... I'm in love... my new 15" i7 macbook pro with 8gb RAM just arrived and I feel the need to stroke it.. a lot..... David

Hi David, It sounds very much like an issue with 32 but bridge. We're still in the 32 to 64bit transition stage and many users are finding 32-bit bridge to not give great results unfortunately. Hopefully Waves will pop up soon with 64-bit support but until then there's not much I can suggest. I would howeverm be interested to know your experiences running the same project in 32-bit mode... :) Rounik ... Ooh. New 15" MBP... Sounds lovely!

Yeah - I'll try opening in 32 bit mode.... I've ended up bouncing all tracks individually to avoid the problem... but I'll let you know. Once we get 64 bit waves support I suspect this will be a thing of the past (when east west do the same...). I'm stroking the machine every so often.... just so it knows I'm friendly! David

Cool. My MBP is feeling jealous... grumbling something about never being stroked anymore :p
