All laptops have graphics cards in them. What year is your MBP, and what GPU is in it? Go to the Apple menu, to About This Mac, then to More Info. You'll see a listing for either Displays or Graphics. That's where you'll see what GPU it's running. What CPU? How much RAM?
Some codecs take advantage of the GPU, some can't. Drive speed plays a small role in the speed of rendering, but mostly "rendering" in a timeline depends solely on the CPU most of the time. For FCP X you need fast CPU, fast GPU, lots of RAM, fast hard drive. Those are the major things that matter, all working together.
