From garage Band to Express or Studio?
Hi I've been using Garage Band for a number or years and I've been wondering if I should go to Logic Express first, then to Studio or should I skip Express and go to Studio directly (cost consideration aside). In regards to my computer specs, which one should/can I go with? My guess is that both are Logic 9 ? Thanks iMac Mac OS X (10.6.1) 2.0 GHz Intel core duo, 2 Gig memory

Hello Mysthral, Welcome to the macProVideo forums :) Yes, you are correct both Logic Pro and Express are currently at version 9. I think both Pro and Express will perform much the same on your computer specs. The main differences between Pro and Express are Pro has some more effects and instruments and Pro is part of Logic Studio which consists of: - Waveburner (Pro CD Burning/Mastering software) - Sound Track Pro (integrates with FCP and is a good audio editor) - Compressor - Mainstage 2 (all of Logic's effects and instruments designed for live performance) - All the Jam packs (many gigabytes of Apple Loops and sounds/samples) Logic Pro also can work in Surround sound which I believe Logic Express cannot. All in all if price is no consideration then go Logic Pro as the extra Jam Packs (apple loops) if purchased separately would cost as much as Logic itself! Then of course, you can buy Logic Express and then go Pro by paying the price difference for the upgrade. But the learning curve will be no different whether you go Pro or Express. Either way, checking out the Logic 101 tutorial will help you get to grips with how to make music in Logic ;-) Hope that helps, Rounik

[quote:]Yes, you are correct both Logic Pro and Express are currently at version 9.[/quote] Hello Rounik, What I meant was, that in both cases it should be the same Logic software sold. Considering the price difference, I might not be able to go with Studio just yet and there are certain things that I don't need right now, like Mainstage (useless in my case) and surround sound, that I can wait and upgrade later too. Thank you

Hi Mysthral, I see. Well in that case, considering your budget, go with Logic Express 9 and then upgrade in the future if you need to. These are some of the differences between Logic Pro 9 which are not in Logic Express 9: - No Logic Node - Surround - Instruments: EVP88, EVD6, Sculpture, EVB3, - Effects: Delay Designer, Space Designer, Linear Phase EQ, Match EQ, Multipressor Logic Express is still, IMHO, very good value for money! Well, there Logic Express 9 is a much better package than Logic Express 8 was! Anyway, looking at the US Apple Online store: Logic Studio = $499 Logic Express 9 = $199 Upgrade from Express to Pro = $299 So buying Express and then upgrading to Pro later down the line when you're ready will actually save you a dollar ;-) Best Rounik

Maybe it won't hurt my wallet as much if I do it in two steps (can't buy much with a buck anyway) and learning Logic in Express, without as much to learn, will give me a base to go with Studio afterwards... I hope! ;0)

Went and bought Logic Express to try it out. I still might go with Studio in the future, yes, there are more sounds and often times the inserts are not visually the same as with Studio. Right now, I decided to try Record from Propellerheads. Even though I don't have Reasons, it still very intuitive for a guitarist to work with and comes with pretty decent sounds too.

Thank you, I will... and in the end the music is more important than how you get it in, anyways! ;0)
