System Failure!
My G5 won't start. It goes to the "restart computer" screen and upon restart gives a "system failure message CPU=0 code=00000009" I can boot computer with the install disk and run Logic but cant boot the normal way. I ran the hardware test and everything passed. Anybody ever hear of this?

Do you have a Clone / System back up? Does that start up ok? I would try backing up all your important files from the G5's system drive to an external drive. Then re-format the G5 and see if the problem persists. Also a good idea to consult Apple directly. Let me know how you get on. Rounik

I'm not sure what a clone is so no I guess not. I just back up my valuable content. Like iTunes, Mac Pro Videos. My external drive won't handle a time machine back-up because it wants to copy my samples on my second internal drive.

A clone is much like making a mirror-image of a drive or folder. I use an application called 'Carbon Copy Cloner' (free) to clone my system drive to an external drive... which makes it a bootable startup drive. (You can then startup from that drive in System Preferences). Check out this recent thread here where Bj has given some great advice on backing up, cloning and Time Machine. Actually you can exclude items/folders to be backed up by Time Machine: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1427 :) Rounik

Problem solved, I called Apple support and they narrowed it down to a problem with one of my "start-up items". Once these were moved to the trash the problem was solved. He had me trash all of my start-up items and one of them was "nedi helper". What is this used for?

Glad to hear it's solved! Out of interest, what other startup items did you have? nedi helper I believe was simply designed to help sync between NED and NEDi on the iPhone in a previous version of NED. Don't think that would have had any bearing on your issue though. :)

There were 2 other items. One was PACESupport the other was called Qmaster. I don't know what they were used for. I had just used a USB flash memory stick before issue started. I also used a driver disk for the new monitor I bought ( non Apple).

PACE is a copy protection system used by some applications and plugins... I know many people in the past have had technical issues with PACE... this might well have been the culprit. The only way to know is to move one startup item out at a time... but I wouldn't be surprised if it was a PACE issue...

After I removed the start-up items, a dock link to a piece of demo software called iSkysoft (video format converter) was broken so I just dragged it into oblivion and it went up in smoke. I'm glad I got my G5 fixed. I just bought a new 8 core Mac Pro, but I still want to get a lot of use out of this old dual 2.3 G5. It's no slouch.

hmmm... I just googled iSkysoft. There's a lot of video downloading apps like these around. Personally, I try to keep my Music based Mac's as lean as possible ...
