Lately I have been having problem with some samples sounds in my ESX sampler library. For example when I load the ballad electric bass it will spend a very long time searching for it then will come up with the sample linked to several songs for me to choose one. After choosing one it still takes a long time and even try to load a different sample. Can I fix up ESX library and bring it back to factory settings. Also any ideas what could have caused that so I can avoid it in the future. Thank you

The connection between EXS instruments and the samples they call for is notorious for "losing its mind". I mention that to let you know that you are not alone in this. There, don't you feel so much better now? :-) Here's my key question for you: Do you save each project with the "assets" checkbox enabled (in the save dialog box) AND with the EXS instruments and samples boxes checked as well? Ok, that's what I thought. It's likely that you now have multiple copies of EXS samples and instruments all over your system (e.g., wherever you've saved project folders) because you had those checkboxes enabled. And because of this, EXS is now having trouble deciding which copy of the samples to use. Two things for now... 1) when you save your projects in the future, do not enable those checkboxes. In fact, unless you need to make your projects "portable" (you work on your projects on multiple systems), you don't need to have any of the assets checkboxes enabled at all. 2) questions: - Where do you store your projects? - Do you know how to force Spotlight to re-index your drives?

I store my projects in a separate drive inside my mac pro. I don't know how to force Spotlight to re-index my drives. In the near future I am going to move all my projects to a bigger drive inside my mac pro any suggestions there? By the way I went to the EXS24 under option and did restore EXS24 to mkI default settings that took care of the problem, I hope it did not create another.

I don't know what restoring to MK1 defaults does, to be honest. OK, that's good that you're saving to a separate drive. So, check this out... Logic/EXS uses Spotlight to index the locations of samples, or so the story goes. Now, the EXS instrument itself (not the GUI/front panel but the part you see when you access the EXS instrument editor) contains references to the samples which the instrument needs. The instruments themselves can only live in one location -- the Sampler Instruments folder on your main HD. However, samples can live anywhere. So when Logic loses its mind in trying to load up EXS samples, what's happening, I believe, is that the name of each sample gets looked up by Spotlight to find its location. And... ...because you've saved and re-saved the samples so many times in all of your various projects (by having the EXS samples box checked when you save), Spotlight now has this huge number of options to choose from as to which of those copies of each sample it's going to load up. So one way you can stop this from happening is by re-indexing your drives, and in doing this, specifically excluding your project drive. This way, Spotlight will keep its nose out of your projects, and thus, won't keep finding all those multiple copies of the samples. It will likely then have only one choice as to where to find those samples: in the samples folder (located in the same directory as the sampler instruments folder). I'll post back later with the procedure to re-index spotlight. But in the meantime, I'd like to emphasize what I said before... that unless you need to make your projects "portable", it's not necessary to save your projects with any EXS assets at all because they already exist on your system in their original locations.

So... to re-index Spotlight, go to your System Preferences panel and click on Spotlight. You'll see a tab called "Privacy". Drag your project drive to that window and let Spotlight do its thing. Alternatively, clear the decks entirely and start with a completely fresh index by dragging all of your hard drives to that window, and then removing all drives except for your project drive. This will force a re-indexing of all drives but remove all prior indexing of your project drive.

"Clear the decks" is just an expression meaning "starting over from the beginning".
