I cannot get the pan knob to work on my channel strips with Mainstage. I have a really simple setup with just one instrument panel strip and when I pan hard right or left, the dB meters on the channel strip show to be working (only the left or right meter responds depending on the pan knob setting) but what I still get equal volume from the left and right speakers. Output from Mac is going through PreSonus audio interface. Any ideas? Been battling this for a while.

Hi Mike, Can you try a test? Switch to built-in output and plug in headphones to your Mac's built-in audio out. Do you still hear equal volume when panning? Thanks R

Wow, that almost works. Good idea. Strings and synths pan correctly when I disconnect the PreSonus Audio Interface and switch to built-in output. However, the organ bleeds over so it never really completely pans full-left or full-right. I could live with that. I'm using a firewire connection from the Mac to the PreSonus Firestudio Mobile. Then two separate output cables to separate powered monitors (left and right). So I guess the problem is in either the Mac output settings, the firewire connection, or the PreSonus box. Any ideas?

Nevermind. Updated firmware in my Presonus Firestudio Mobile and now pan works! Thanks for heading me down the right path. I was troubleshooting MainStage.

Hi Mike, Glad to hear you got it sorted. btw, on a channel strip in Logic/Mainstage the "pan" rotary encoder does not necessarily control the pan... On a stereo channel strip it controls balance. On a mono channel strip it controls pan. I'd recommend inserting a Gain plugin on a stereo channel strip to control the pan. Cheers R

Hi Mike, Sure! 1. Select the channel strip you wish to insert a Gain plugin on in the 'Channel Strips' area on the right of the Mainstage interface. Thanks for the excellent instructions. I added the gain plugin and ran the balance 100% (hard pan right) and I still had some bleed over into the left channel. It also had a latency problem as the left channed was receiving the sound noticeable later than the right channel. I removed the gain plugin and will just have to live with some bleed over to the other channel. I forgot to mention why we are doing this. My sound guy wants to have volume control for each of my two keyboards. The only way I can figure out how to do this with Mainstage is to pan one keyboard left and the other right.

I have another question that perhaps you can help me with. I should explain my set-up first: So I have a M-Audio Oxygen 61 for upper keyboard (61 un-weighted) and my very old Roland RD-150 (88 weighted) for the lower keyboard. Top keyboard connected by USB directly to the Mac. Lower keyboard does not have USB so it is connected by MIDI to my PreSonus Firestudio Mobile audio interface. I don’t know how that works, but it does. Output from the Mac goes by firewire to the PreSonus and then two audio out (left and right) to direct boxes and on to the church sound board. Upper keyboard is always hard panned left and lower keyboard is always hard panned right so that the sound guy can control each keyboard (volume and effects) separately. The church does everything in mono. I’m still unhappy with the Ivory keyboard sounds and have been troubleshooting for a month. I found that if I put the identical Ivory piano patch on BOTH keyboards, they sound quite different. The M-Audio gives a tinny, de-tuned sound and the Roland gives a muted sound and poor dynamics (may be the old velocity sensors in the Roland???). I don’t like either sound but I’m wondering why I would get such different sounds. I have worked with different Ivory settings and the sound guy has worked on different sound board settings but nothing sounds great … just OK. Do you have any ideas on what else to try? I’m thinking of replacing the old Roland with a new 88-weighted keyboard controller. Any suggestions? Thanks, Mike

Hi Mike, This is odd. You shouldn't be getting latency from on channel only or bleed... Have you tried replicating this using the built-in audio as opposed to the Presonus Firestudio? odd...
