There is a lot of discussion on the Logic forums about the causes/effects of latency. Most people seem to think it is a single issue-- when in fact it is not.
I think it would be great to do a dedicated segment on combating latency from the standpoint of:
-General overview of the types of latency encountered by the DAW owner
-Latency vs. Delay (from the DAW's perspective)
-Key limitations inherent in Logic 8
-Plug-In delay compensation (PDC)- Truth and Fiction
-Low-latency mode- Truth and Fiction
-Record Latency (Audio and Midi)
-Use of the I/O plugin (and completeing the same tasks without the I/O plugin)
-Latency introduced when recording external effects (and how to effectively combat it)
-Use of Expert Sleepers' Latency Fixer plugin (and other solutions)
-Latency issues encountered by MIDI musicians (in the box)
-Latency issues encountered by MIDI musicians (using outboard gear)
-Latency issues encountered by Audio musicians
-Latency issues encountered by people mixing completely in the box
-Latency issues encountered when using Logic Pro plugins
-Latency issues encountered by people using 3rd party plugins
-Latency issues encountered by people using outboard effects
This tutorial would enlighten people to the fact that they are not facing a single latency issue but a number of issues in parallel. It would highlight the fact that each issue needs to be identified and dealt with in order to effectively combat the negative effects. I am not aware of any other resource which has confronted this topic in depth and I think it would be an amazing addition to the growing library of tips and tricks.
PS: This is one of the few issues that affects ALL Logic users at a fundamental level.
