I'm working on sound design for a project, and have been layering some of the CAF files with my own audio to create sounds. I loaded a bunch of audio fx from the Apple Loops library included with Logic. As I'm working at 24/48, I selected these 16/44.1 files and converted them. I hadn't realized that some were 5.1 surround, and I've never worked with surround. I'd like to change some to stereo or maybe mono in some cases, but I don't see how to go about doing that. I've already bounced one of the complete sounds out, deselecting the surround option, so that became a stereo file. Do I need to do that with each surround audio file I'm using?

Hey there. I've been working on a piece today that has a track of Vienna Symphony cellos, and it was sounding quite good. I played with the cello regions, dragging them forward and backward slightly to get a more natural sound. I checked my automation to see whether it had moved with the regions (which it had), but when I switched out of automation mode, the regions wouldn't play. I've checked my signal path, and it's unchanged. It isn't affecting other tracks, just the VSL one. I'm quite new to VSL, but its interface seems to look just as it did before. I created a new track, copied the old regions into it, and get the same results. If I open Piano Roll, I can click on individual MIDI notes and they play as they should, but when I hit play, I get nothing. Nothing is muted or soloed, and my automation looks as it did an hour ago. 5 minutes later... I just re-recorded the cello part on a new VSL track, and this one works fine. For now. The old one is still toast. Any idea what might cause this problem?

I tried the same steps I had done before, but the new VSL track is fine. Must have been some random 1 or 0 getting misplaced... I'm using Logic 8. I'm not keen on switching until reading that the bugs have been worked out. Maybe next year...

Hi there. I occasionally get a system overload message when running Logic 8 on my 2.8 GHz quad-core (4 GB RAM; 10.5.8). On tonight's project, I have 9 SI (7 Logic instruments; 2 Omnisphere, but not hefty ones) tracks, each with one or two plug-ins, but nothing that should be bogging me down. And the point where it stops has only 3 tracks with active regions. When it does stop, I see that one of the 4 cores is tapped out, while the others show no activity. Doesn't Logic share the load between them, or do I need to tell it to do so?

As an aside, what's an FFT-based effect? I saw this in the manual...

Thanks for the links. I don't see an answer to my specific question in that first document, at least not about the individual cores and the way they work together (or not). I'll keep digging...

I've checked on some other CPU heavy projects, and I think the issue might be something specific to this particular one. I noticed it takes quite a bit longer to open than most as well. And my theory that only one core might be functioning was quickly shot down... I'll do a Save As and hopefully salvage this piece. Thanks again.

I'm using a low-rez .mov file to show a client approximate placement and levels of some music clips I created for her documentary. Every time I save the project, Logic (8) shows a progress bar for copying the .mov, then tells me Copy/Move Failed. The project is unharmed, so far as I can see, and my changes have been saved. Why would it even try to copy or move the .mov file? Thanks
