I have an older Motif 7, Triton Studio, and Korg M3. I just bought a new Imac 27"; always had PC's before. I am 59 years old and was a computer wiz of sorts years ago, but have had years of medical issues, cancer, wrist pain, mental. I recently got some extra money. I used to play B3's and hard rock. Had all the cool keyboards. Original Mini-Moog, Fender Rhodes, etc. I miss the ones with the right sounds. I am writing some rock/Christian (sort-of) music. I want to be able to play as much live as I can, but my idea is to create songs to give others ideas, maybe sell them; get new ideas!! My wrists are really bad; another reason to get ideas in a DAW. I did a lot with MIDI when it was first released. I have designed digital devices, but things are slow for me now. I am using TC Helicon VoiceLive too...I not a singer,but without the ideas the songs don't make sense either. I need to get the ideas together sooner or I will forget them. Bottom line, I need to understand the more technical stuff so that I am not intimidated. I started to use my keyboards and map some NI KORE AU's in a bass line and the MIDI went nuts. I am using VB3 in a song, using my MOTIF as a controller, and the Triton changes the program. I used Cubase with my PC, but I want to move on and get serious before I come up with any other issues... Does this make sense?

I am so far from being a LOgic Studio expert, maybe I shouldn't answer you on this, but I am a computer savvy ex-network admin with years of Intel PC and Server experience. You probably already know you don't need 8 gig of memory to run Logic in 64bit mode, so you can experience some of what I am going to tell you without buying a thing. I did and the outcomes left me thinking it had to be the lack of memory that must of caused be problems. I installed an additional 2 sticks of 1066 DDR3 thinking this would smooth out Logic's funny hiccups, but now I have a blazingly fast 32 bit Logic Studio 9. I noticed first Logic reconfiguring itself to adjust to using 32bit au's etc., in 64bit mode, just like it did when my new i7 2.88 2TB with 4GB Logic was switched to 64bit. I just jumped from Windows 7 64bit and it seems to have many more vendors on board with with them. Once configured, I felt like Logic was sort of blinking now and then like someone with eye tick. This annoying blip and the more annoying fact that most of the rest of my Logic 9 innards were still firing off in 32bit, just pissed me off. Logic just seems to feel smoother in 32bit, but I will admit a faster and smoother Logic Studio 9 with 8GB, then 4GB.

I have run into a snag! I have figured out most discrepancies between key strokes; small things, but now I continue to find myself right back where I started from; the reason why I came here and the reason I continue to search for simple explanation to my obviously goofy problem... it just can't be this hard! I have done most of the first part of " Logic 7 101 and 105, Logic's Environment Explored." To be frank, I was quite certain I knew how this should work and it works easily and flawlessly in Cubase. Is this nuclear science or the end of my last days of thinking? I have three keyboards of different ages. A Motif 7, a Triton Studio, and a Korg M3. I want to set them up so each has its own MIDI port; so that it can use a specific AU while using its own voice/voices; I used to do this in Cubase. Like having the Studio setting up a range of Kore base notes using one track. No problem in Cubase, but I am getting old trying to do this in Logic. I have spent weeks trying to get this to work. It's easy to set up the range, but no matter what I do in the environment I cannot separate the keyboards so that they stop playing back in other tracks. It's like the SUM is on no matter what I do. I don't have the same screens as in the 105 tutorial.... I have figured out a lot of them, but maybe I'm missing something?

Sorry, I realized shortly after reading my post that I had left much to the imagination and more that made one think I was not well versed. I tried to fix this, but it was too late. This is what I don't get right. In my example I have three keyboards, each configured with its' own usb cable and configured MIDI channel. They show up automatically in Snow Leopard as, the MOTIF (channels 1-7), Triton Studio (Connected through a Fast Track Ultra DIN-2-USB channel 12), and the Korg M3 Sound USB channel 8). I am old and when MIDI first came out it was simple. In Cubase it seems I just gave Keyboard names to each MIDI keyboard, created tracks and used these friendly names to drive them. Filtered as needed. It seems like I need to remove the SUM port and create layers for each keyboard somehow or know something I am not getting. I have removed every layer and still have keyboards walking all over each other... I was really hoping another weekend wasn't going up in smoke. I feel quite dumb, but I have had a lot of medical issues and maybe this is beyond my ability.

Thank you. I remember vaguely trying this too, as another stab to another reading somewhere; someplace, sometime. I gave up and went to sleep last night, but maybe this new morning on Sunday this week will be the charm. Your directions do make sense; it really can't be this hard to do something everyone must do all the time. I will let you know.

I think your advice, in addition with a few sighs and deep breaths, was the right one. When I had done this before, I knew nothing about about how the environment worked. Then I went on an environment witch hunt. But, it wasn't all in vain, there is much to know and use along the way. The time and money I spent here has been worth it. Everything has gone wrong this weekend. My car etc. I had such a great reply full of wisdom, but now the best I can say is just: Thank you for getting me back on a more quiet path. I was pulling my hair out. I even put some drums in an idea...wow...!

I have continued on learning about Logic's environment. I have already gotten a lot out of the modules and forum help, so I am really happy. The module offered here is on Logic 7 105 and I have had to do a bit of translation until now where I may have gotten into a bigger problem. A lot of the layer/s windows don't look the same, but I don't have some of menus and maybe I don't have the "Audio configuration window," at all in my Logic 9. Please Advice. Thanks James.
