I have an old G4 dual 450. I've looked at digi's site, but all I could see about this was the OS, not the spec of the machine. Would anyone here be able to enlighten me? Maestro_T

Hello Rounik, Thanks for this. Yeah, this was all that I can find. I've got enough memory and I'm running OSX 10.4, so I guess I 'should' be ok. I use an M-Audio Delta 1010, so that part is covered as well. I've got more questions, but I thinks it might be best to start another thread. Hello, I have been planning to get this setup built for a long time and hope people here can advise me. Please forgive me if this gets a bit long-winded. :-) I've worked in a studio which uses 'full blown' ProTools TDM, and have always wanted my own system. I'm proud to say that I was one of the first to jump on the 'LE' bandwagon when the original Digi01 came out. I really liked the system because it used the same graphical interface, but was hampered by the fact that it was CPU dependent - even though I had a really good PC at that time, it really wasn't adequate. I really wanted a system where all that the computer did was to give me a visual view of what was going on. So, I thought I'd come up with a compromise. Then, the Digi01 was discontinued, so I sold it and put things on the back-burner while I got on with making music. For the proposed system, I have the following hardware: 1 x Dual G4 450 1 x M-Audio Delta 1010 1 x old PowerMac 9200(or something like that) 2 x Akai 4track HD recorders 1 x Akai CDS3000XL sampler 1 x Mackie 12 channel analogue mixer 1 x Yahama Promix01 automated digital mixer I also have a couple of old sound modules/drum machines that I could press into service if needed. I have the following Software: Cubase on both macs Digital Performer on G4 Recycle! on the Powermac I plan to get: ProTools M-Powered Plugins/applications for Time-stretching, pitch shifting/correcting, and harmonising. Right, so now here's my plan. I want to build a system where I record and edit audio in ProTools and 'ferry' the recorded audio back and forth between the computers and the HD recorders. This would relieve the stress off the CPU so that I could do more complex "stuff". :-) The HD recorders are synched up via MMC/MTC and so far, have been rock solid and completely reliable. Plus they're as easy to use as the old tape based porta-studios. I do most of my composition in Cubase on the PC. This is mostly midi work, via external hardware modules/FX with the odd virtual instrument/FX. Then, when I'm lucky enough to have a singer, I record vocals to go with my compostions. I mainly work with solo singers, and this sometimes makes backing vocals difficult. I also like to 're-use' the vocal recordings for different tracks and different tempos etc. I now want to use the Macs, the sampler, and the HD recorders to record vocals and manipulate them into backing vocals, harmonies etc... Then incorporate them into various compositions. I tend to do this sort of thing after a recording session so that I'm not eating into a singers recording time. Although a very convoluted way of doing things, can anyone here see any other major pitfalls with my plan? Can anyone recommend other software(s) that will "help" me to realise my system? I'm an old school producer with old school equipment and I want to make the most out of it instead of constantly buying new stuff and never really getting the full use out of what I already have. Hello Christian, Thanks for the reply. I will definitely be looking at Melodyne. I've already 'heard' great things about it. A more powerful Mac would be great, but I'm trying to work with what I already have and limit the cost of any new additions. It's my understanding that when these machines were more in use, there was still quite a bit that could be done with them. My plan is to do the manipulations to the point that I am happy with them, then shift the processed audio to the HD recorders/sampler. That way it's as if it's just midi and has little/no hit on the CPU. I could then just carry on and build a more complex arrangement without stressing the computer.

I have an old G4 dual 450 that I would like to do some video editing on. I'm not really expecting 'too' much from this machine, but I want as many features in the application as possible, so I'd rather use Pro than Express. In your opinion, would this machine be capable? - Maybe with an older version? Maestro_T

xredflagx, I pretty much expected that this machine really wouldn't be up to the job. Do you - or anyone else here - know what applications were used when this spec of machine was popular - (Dual G4 450)? As I asked previously, maybe an older version? Right, After much research, I have found that if I want to use FCP with this machine, I would need to use version 3: System Requirements OS Required Apple MacOS 9.2.2, Apple MacOS X 10.1.1 Min Processor Type PowerPC G3 - 300 MHz Min RAM Size 256 MB Min Hard Drive Space 40 MB Peripheral / Interface Devices CD-ROM or 4: System Requirements Min Hard Drive Space: 1 GB Min Processor Type: PowerPC G4 - 350 MHz Min RAM Size: 384 MB OS Required: Apple MacOS X 10.2.5 Peripheral / Interface Devices: AGP graphics card or 'possibly'5. Does anyone here have one of these that they might want to part with? If so, how much would you want for it. You can PM if you would like to discuss it. I'll go and have a look on Ebay in the meantime, although, I don't really trust Ebay. :-(
