Hello all, First off, I'm a fairly new member here and also new to Logic. I've been enjoying so many fantastic videos for about a month now and I have to say you guys are great! I was just watching Ch.181 of Martin Sitter's Core Logic 9 and had a question: The knob next to the Bus Send, 'controls the amount of channel signal sent to an Aux channel' as I understand from Ch.179. In Ch.181, Mr. Sitter is explaining pre- vs. post- fader sends and demonstrates how, in a post-fader selection, the signal level sent to the Aux is affected by the fader. I was just wondering how the knob next to the Bus Send, then, factors into that equation? Do both the knob and the fader perform the same function in that scenario? Does one override the other? Hello, What's the easiest way to transpose an audio file in Logic ProX? I'm used to doing this in Peak, but it no longer plays nicely with 10.8, and I've grown tired of deleting preferences before I open it, EVERY time... I'm a keyboard player and it's often helpful to play along with a song in the key the band will be playing it in, and it's also helpful for our singer to hear and decide which key he prefers it in before everyone learns it, then has to re-learn etc... It doesn't have to be of great quality as it's just being used for reference. I was also wondering about the new formant shift options, and if it can be used to make the vocals sound a little better than usual when you transpose. It's not necessary, but I'd like to know if/how that would fit into the workflow. Using LogicProX 10.0.3, on a late 2012 iMac if that matters... Thanks for your time and information in advance, G

Hello all, I've learned much from the Mainstage 1 and 2 tutorials and have enjoyed them. Thank you Mr Burgess. I was wondering, though, in one of the chapters you mentioned that you would spend some time discussing the use of hardware synths to control Mainstage instead of the dedicated controllers you use in your videos. Did I miss this somewhere because I don't think I ever heard/saw this section? In any event, I use both a Yamaha MotifXS and a Nord Stage classic. The Motif has USB MIDI built in though the Nord must go through an adapter. I'm using an M-Audio Uno for that board. I've looked through both manuals and one thing is clear, I need more information about how MIDI works while I plan the best way to incorporate Mainstage. Is there a video that discusses this in depth? What is the relationship of MIDI Channels to Ports and MIDI Channel Messages? For instance, how is it that a keyboard can only transmit over 16 channels in one port but there are well over 120 MIDI channel commands? To make matters worse, the built in USB MIDI for the MotifXS shows up with 4 ports in Audio/MIDI setup. Should I use Port 2 since the Uno is on Port 1, or does it matter because they are on separate USB ports in my MBP? As you can see, yeah, I'm confused. If anyone can help or point me in the right direction, it would be much appreciated. If anyone has specific info/experience using the two synths I mentioned, why, that would be even better! That does indeed help, thank you Rounik. I poked around the web a bit since my post and found some info about MIDI as well so I think I'm okay there. As for programming my hardware synths, I don't think I was clear enough in my question. I understand I can program my synths to control Mainstage but the knobs/sliders/buttons on the hardware controller(Motif) directly affect the sounds coming from the Motif. See where I'm going? I've got it to where splits and layers work very well between Motif sounds and Mainstage sounds and have some really nice fat warm sounds coming from the both of them. BUT, any knobs/buttons/sliders on the Motif directly affect the sounds coming from it. So can't really use them to control Mainstage sounds. Does that make sense? I programmed a few with some clever MIDI filtering and re-mapping in Mainstage with the mod wheel, for instance, in a tune I know I don't need it in. But what about tunes I need the mod wheel in(to control Motif sounds)? And how confusing will that be 200 songs later with different controllers doing different things on a patch by patch basis? Plus to do this for all of my sounds for the two different projects I'm involved in will be VERY tedious. I wonder if getting something like a Nano Kontrol might be worth it, though both of my USB ports are taken up. Which leads to another question: Will adding a hub to accommodate three devices slow things down for live performance? Another question, I should probably have separate posts for separate questions... What are some of the ways you guys have your laptop set up on stage? I saw a rolling, adjustable mixer stand that might work well. Well, thanks again for your time and info, GRod

If you do not see any incoming MIDI messages in the Transport Bar as Rounik mentioned, it's possible that the controls of your Triton are only sending SysEx commands to itself and not designed to send MIDI messages externally; in the mode you are in, or at all. I ran into that issue with my Motif. From my experience, Motif had to be in Master Mode, and even then, there were limitations. I do not own a Triton anymore (I had and Extreme) but perhaps in the MIDI section of Combi Mode somewhere you may find something... Good Luck, GRod

Hello all, I'm wondering how I can get MainStage to send a SysEx command (F0 43 10 7F 12 0A 00 00 20 F0) to select a Patch in Master Mode of a Motif XF. I can successfully do so from an iPad app, - though I cannot see a place to send this command from a patch in MS. I see where to set MSB/LSB and PrgCh in the MIDI output tab of an External Instrument Channel strip, but no where to have MS send out a SysEx command. Hey Mark, Thanks for the reply. I found that MS CAN send out SysEx commands. It's a bit tedious, but you create a small MIDI file (in Logic or GBand for instance) for each SysEx command that you need to send. In my case above, I created 129 MIDI files, one for every Master Mode location and one to select MasterMode. Then in the MIDI Output Tab of an External Instrument Channel Strip Inspector of each MS Patch, you check Send MIDI file, then select the file. Works great. Also, be careful that "none" is selected in the MIDI Input Tab of the External Instrument Channel Strip Inspector, to avoid any MIDI loops.
