Hi Everyone I am wondering about inconsistencies in Logic when opening standard midi files. The manual says to â??importâ?? them, but if you do, it does not import tempo change info. if you use the open file command it will open the SMF with all tempo changes, but then Logic creates a new generic environment . If I have my autoload open, then choose open file, I can keep my autoload open and when it asks if I would like to copy the environment or make a new one. I choose to copy the environment. But it does not copy my environment the same. none of my plug-ins are inserted any longer, audio instrument tracks are no longer in the arrange window and it blanks out my outputs and makes new ones with generic names. I have a bunch of custom stuff in my autoload that I would like to have when I open a midi file, so I can start reassigning instruments so I am wondering, how do I import or open a standard midi file, with the tempo changes and still keep my environment the same? . This has bugged me for some time now and although there are work arounds, like copying and pasting or importing the environment. There must be a simpler way to do this, but I can't seam to figure it out. I have hundreds of midi files in DP and would like to convert them all to Logic eventually. Thanks, Don

For anyone that is interested here is my work around method. Please feel free to offer any suggestions. I start with saving my midi file from DP as a SMF format 0 to my desktop. I open Logic and my Autoload comes up. I import the midi file into my autoload song (or I can drag and drop) and then save it (save as) with a new title. I then go to the open command (command O) and open the midi file. keeping my other new logic song open, and creating a new environment, which is generic. there is no point in copying the environment since this does not work anyway From the new song I open the tempo, markers, and key signature lists copy that info and paste it into the lists of the first song where I imported the midi file. I then close the song with the generic environment and now I can work on my midi file, with my autoload's environment intact my wish list: full import of midi files, not just track info. DP uses device and name files (.middev & .midnam) that are stored in your Library>Audio>Midi Devices>MOTU folder on your hard drive. Even though these are set up in your core midi, Audio Midi Setup, Logic does not access them. So the only way to get your synth's patch names into logic is either type them in one by one or copy paste from a text document. There is a handy program called cherry picker, that allows you to open and edit midnam files, you can also use it to do the copy and pasting into Logic. some of the synth's you own may already have environments created for them, with all the patch names. do a google search for Logic environments for your synth's. one place where I found a few is http://www.swiftkick.com. I use cherry picker just to copy the names and then paste them into my Multi instrument representing my synth in Logic. You need to set up a multi instrument in your environment read page 214 Logic 7 manual or Page 883 Logic 8 manual. After you figure out how to set it up you can copy your patch names out of cherry picker. open the motif .midnam, and you will see all the preset banks. click on the left in the checkbox to open the bank, on the top left there is a box that says copy. Choose that, and copy the names to text edit from there you can paste them into the appropriate bank in Logic. pay attention to the bank select commands for each preset bank (B0 & B32) so you can set up the correct ones in your multi instrument Don
