Re: Problem automating Pitch Bends in Logic 9 using co...
I spoke too soon!
Here is the summary. If you need more info I have included the details further down. Sorry for the short story!
The bottom line is regardless what I do, I have never been able to automate the pitch bend wheel on a recorded midi region. Â Â
4 carved in stone facts:
1) automation not working regardless
2) I completely loose my pitch wheel function when I do a LEARN and forget to get out of my controllers HYPER CONTROL. Â Â This seems to really mess things up. Â Â Â
3) It seems to  RESET things properly when I go into EXTERNAL MIDI mode (recorded a midi region with external midi sound module).Â
4) Last, but not least, I did the LEARN correctly this time; tried to automate and instead of staying in POS. BENDER RANGE (the object of the automation), it keeps 'jumping out' and replaces it with PAN. Â Â Now, all the pitch bend wheel does is PAN, including when I am recording with an external midi?
THE GORY DETAILS:
IT RECORDS THE PITCH BEND DATA AND I SEE THE DATA ON THE PIANO ROLL
SO, I RECORD A MIDI REGION, THEN PLAY IT BACK, STILL IN RECORD MODE, AND I HEAR THE PITCH BENDS WHEN I TURN THE WHEEL. I DO NOT HEAR THE PITCH BENDS WHEN I AM NOT IN RECORD MODE. I GUESS THAT IS NORMAL????
AGAIN, WHEN AUTOMATING ( TOUCH MODE AND AUTOMATION SET TO POS. BENDER RANGE) THE PITCH BEND DOESN'T WORK. I HEAR IT WHEN I MANIPULATE THE WHEEL, BUT IT DOES NOT RECORD AUTOMATION PITCH BEND DATA. AND I DO NOT SEE IT WHEN GO TO THE PIANO ROLL (PITCH BEND LANE).
I JUST DID A LEARN FOR THE PITCH BEND WHEEL, BUT DURING THAT, I FORGOT TO GET OUT OF HYPER CONTROL ON MY CONTROLLER. WHEN YOU DO A LEARN, YOU HAVE TO BE OUT OF HYPER CONTROL AND IN TRANSPORT MODE. BECAUSE OF THAT, I NOW DON'T HEAR MY PITCH BEND WHEEL WORKING AGAIN. THIS IS WHAT HAPPENED YESTERDAY. SO, THAT (DOING THE LEARN WHILE STILL IN HYPERCONTROL) SEEMS TO BLOW ME OUT OF THE WATER.
I JUST DID A LEARN IN TRANSPORT MODE (WHICH IS THE WAY IT'S SUPPOSED TO WORK) AND WHEN I DID THE AUTOMATION, IT WROTE THE AUTOMATION DATA, BUT I DID NOT HEAR THE PITCH BENDS DURING THE AUTOMATION AND DURING PLAYBACK. SO, NOW, I AM BACK TO WHERE I WAS: THE PITCH BEND WHEEL IS NOT WORKING.
NOW, WITH THE KNOWLEDGE THAT THE PITCH BEND WHEEL WAS WORKING AND SEEMED TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM BEFORE WHEN I RECORDED AN EXTERNAL MIDI, I TRIED THAT AGAIN, AND THIS TIME NO LUCK. STILL NO PITCH BEND WHEEL WORKING. HOWEVER, I JUST REALIZED THAT I WAS IN PERFORMANCE MODE AND THE CHANNEL WAS SET TO 10 ON BOTH THE CONTROLLER AND THE SOUND MODULE (FROM EXPERIMENTING EARLIER). I SET BOTH CHANNELS BACK TO 1 AND PUT THE SOUND MODULE INTO PATCH MODE AND NOW IT WORKS.
I WILL NOW TRY TO DO THIS AGAIN, THIS TIME, REMEMBERING THAT I NEED TO BE IN TRANSPORT MODE WHEN I DO A LEARN.
I TRIED THIS, AND NOW WHEN I AM IN AUTOMATION MODE, AND CLICK ON POS. BENDER RANGE, IT JUMPS TO PAN WHEN I DO THE AUTOMATION???? REGARDLESS, WHAT I SET THE AUTOMATION TO, IT JUMPS TO PAN??
NOW, WHEN I AM COMPLETELY OUT OF AUTOMATION MODE, THE PITCH BEND WHEEL JUST DOES A PAN. I AM STILL IN TRANSPORT MODE ON THE CONTROLLER. I WILL NOW GET BACK INTO HYPER CONTROL AND SEE IF THAT CHANGES ANYTHING. RESULT: IT STILL JUST PANS.
