Newbie can't find info on capturing for FCP 10
You may have seen this question 1000 times, and if so, I apologize. I have used FCP 7 for years and love it, but looks like we have to go to 10. Apparently 10 doesn't have Log & Capture, so how do we capture video? We have a multi-camera shoot that we export from a Blackmagic 4K mixer that we want to capture for editing, and will be using a brand new Mac Pro we just bought. I'd greatly appreciate any help on this.

Hi - According to Apple : "The Log and Transfer and Log and Capture functions in Final Cut Pro 7 are replaced by the Import Media function in Final Cut Pro X." Final Cut Pro 7: Log and Capture; Final Cut Pro X: Choose File > Import > Media There's some further discussion in this Apple document: https://www.apple.com/final-cut-pro/docs/Final_Cut_Pro_X_for_Final_Cut_Pro_7_Editors.pdf I've also linked this thread to one of our FCPX courses that deals with Importing -- maybe someone can provide a more direct answer..

Thanks for the reply and the link, I appreciate it. It seems to confirm what I have heard, that X can only import video, not capture it. So my question remains, how do I capture video for importing into X? What do people use to record?

FCPX can in fact capture live video! To capture live, just use the Import window, and select the camera. There are several third-party options to connect a DVD or old VHS or old Mini-DV camera to a Mac. This is the same as you'd do with any other NLE, except we use the Import Window for it.

Wow, that's great! Thanks! So the camera (in this case the line cut feed from our video mixer) would be recognized if we just connect it up using a Thunderbolt connector or whatever?

If it is a compatible device, like any other OS or NLE.
